Known as the Diamond City, Petchburi boasts three palaces spanning the reigns of King Rama 4 and King Rama 6.

• Khao Wang, literally meaning ‘Palace on the Hill’ is located on the hilltop within Phra Nakhon Khiri Historical Park. Built at the behest of King Mongkut as his summer palace, it was completed in 1860.
• Ban Puen, officially called Phra Ram Ratchaniwet, was constructed in a European baroque and art-nouveau style between 1909 and 1916, at the royal command of King Chulalongkorn.
• Mrigadayavan Palace, often referred to as “The Palace of Love and Hope”, was built from golden teakwood at the command of King Vajiravud. It was his seaside summer palace from 1923 until his passing in 1925.

The provincial capital is blessed by several impressive temples. These include Wat Mahathat Worawiharn, Wat Kampheng Laeng and Wat Yai Sumannaram, collectively displaying the religious artistry that shaped the city’s 12^th – 18^th century history.

Further afield, in adjoining Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, is Wat Huay Mongkol, which houses the world’s largest statue of the legendary Thai monk, Luang Phor Thuad, revered for his ability to perform miracles.

The largest national park in Thailand is great for trekking, birdwatching, animal spotting and a range of boating activities on the reservoir. Pa-La-U Waterfall is perhaps the most popular attraction within the park. Its 16 levels hold pools for bathing amongst the friendly fish and swarms of butterflies.

Integrating culture, contemporary art and lifestyle, Cicada Market features stalls displaying handmade decorative items, clothes and second-hand wares. It is also a hub for creative activities, workshops, exhibitions and performances ranging from dance, music and fine arts to community theatre.

Built in 2001 on a former elephant corral, the vineyard’s sandy, loamy soil, enriched with slate, has proven ideal for grape cultivation. The beautiful countryside location makes for a great day out with a range of activities to enjoy.

In the heart of the town, the night market bustles to life from sunset as traders hawk their wares. It’s a great spot for people-watching while enjoying a quick bite or refreshing drink.

Hua Hin’s white sandy swimming beaches draw Bangkokians in their hoards at weekends but are relaxing and quiet on weekdays.

• Cha-am Beach is a long casuarina-lined stretch of clean sand with deckchairs in the shade of the trees, served by nearby restaurants and bars. Watersports are available for the more adventurous.
• Hua Hin Beach is renowned for spectacular sunrises as well as its white sand and gently shelving sandy seabed that make it ideal for swimming and family-friendly watersports.
• Khao Takiab Beach, which translates to ‘Chopstick Hill, is another attraction, not just for the excellent sand but for the walk to a hilltop temple and giant golden Buddha image facing out to sea.
